With over a million potential product variations and a need to get ahead, a bespoke solution was essential. Like with man complex e-commerce websites, we took the time to understand the product and delivered a simple user interface which delivers live previews for all customised products.
Your Image 2 claims to be the first business to offer online canvas personalisation. Many competitors have emerged over the years, each one bringing newer websites which put them ahead of Your Image 2. Our clean design and use of JavaScript has brough Your Image 2 back to the top table with a best-in-class canvas builder which allows customers to personalise their favourite images with instant live previews.
A big challenge we had to overcome was how we handle large images that come from today’s modern camera phones. Manipulating a 20+ megabyte image in a browser over a mobile data connection is impossible, so we came up with the idea to generate a screen-resolution image on upload, meaning the customer unknowingly modifies a much smaller image, while their original full-resolution upload is stored on the server until it’s needed.
As the customer chooses their preferred canvas size, frame, image zoom, rotation and position, a JSON file captures all print specifications for later use. The preferences stored in the JSON file are applied to the original image after the customer completes their order, meaning the customer receives an identical full resolution print compared to what they personalised in their browser.
Today, Your Image 2 can simply download the full resolution image with the modifications applied, and print it. Previously they were spending time mocking up each order in Photoshop before printing, and spending time getting manual approval from the customer over several back-and-forth emails. The investment in this functionality has paid for itself several times over in time saved.
After building trust by delivering a best-in-class Canvas Builder, Your Image 2 commissioned Twilo to expand their online product range to include innovative offerings. Notable additions include Word Art products such as destination word art, various text designs and gifts ideal for occasions such as moving home and weddings. But most challenging of all were the City Map and Star Map products. The City Map uses a Maps API which, coupled with Royal Mail’s address finder, allowing customers to create a beautiful gift from a location of their choice in their own design, with personalisation such as map style, theme, detail and messaging.
The personalised Star Map is one for the Instagrammers. It makes a super personalised gift to mark occasions such as birthdays and weddings. Using an open-source Star Map API, we allow the customer to choose their date, time and location, and return an accurate visual of the constellation based on their request. This is displayed in a beautiful poster which allows the customer to change the colour and detail of the Star Map, as well as add their own wording to make a perfect gift. Perhaps the best compliment of all is when we tell others about this product, and they respond by telling us they’ve used this website themselves when buying gifts for loved ones.
